Legend of the Snow Queen
Ancient legend recalls the story of the Snow Queen, the beautiful ruler of the snows who lived on the highest, most solitary peak in the Alps. Fate had decided that no mortal should ever marry the Snow Queen. But every year on Christmas Eve one brave suitor after another would climb to her crystal palace to try and win her hand. All were turned away, until finally no young men even bothered to try. Then one Christmas Eve, a handsome shepherd from a distant village scaled the mountains and approached the castle. When he saw the Snow Queen he was so struck by her beauty he could not speak. So he knelt before her in admiration for hours on end, never saying a word. To the Queen's surprise she discovered that the young man's behavior touched her heart. But as he said nothing, neither did she. When evening came, the shepherd stood and raised his hand in farewell, believing that he too had failed to win the Queen's hand. As she watched him leave a tear fell from the Snow Queen's eye, the first she had ever shed. When the tear hit the ground it turned into a rose, the romantic flower of love that had never before been seen in the Alps.
